Feast Day Celebrations - Kaboom Sports

We had a fantastic whole school celebration day on our Feast Day on Monday 8 August with Kaboom Sports.  Students were amazing in the way they participated in all the fun activities on offer.  We were very lucky with the weather with the sun shining on us during our Kaboom event.

Family Mass

Thank you to the families who participated in our Family Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish Mass on 6.00 pm last Saturday evening.  It was great seeing you at Mass and being able to celebrate the beginning of our Feast Day celebrations this way.  

ACARA - NAPLAN Trial

Our school was selected by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to participate in this year’s ACARA Item Trial, to be conducted using the Online National Assessment Platform.  The Item Trial is a component of the National Assessment Program, an agreed national education requirement. The aim of the Item Trial is to evaluate NAPLAN test items that are under consideration for inclusion in future tests.  The trial, in Reading and Numeracy, will be conducted next week on Tuesday 16 April for our Year 3 and Year 5 students in 3RJ and 5SD.

Our Feast Day celebrations began with our School families celebrating mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Church last weekend. To all students and families who either read, participated in the entrance procession, the presentation of the gifts or choir and those who joined the Mass, your attendance was greatly appreciated. We continued celebrating on Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day with Kaboom Sports and gathering together to celebrate the Mass yesterday, as a whole school with families and friends.

Mary MacKillop was known for her habit of carrying sweets in her pocket to reward good effort in her students. At the end of the day each student received a special treat! Today all grades participated in a fundraiser to support vulnerable children in Fiji through the work of the Mary MacKillop today foundation. Many thanks for your support and donations. 

CBCA BOOK WEEK

2022 CBCA Book Week theme is 'Dreaming with eyes open...'

This year, students and families are invited to celebrate books, and Australian authors and illustrators. Students are invited to participate in a dress-up day on Wednesday 24th August. What better way to celebrate stories, than becoming the characters in them! Students can dress up as their favourite character from a book or wear their pyjamas and gowns as they enjoy reading a good book before they go to sleep.

All students are encouraged to get involved with Children's Book Week and celebrate the joys of reading at our school!

Sacrament of Confirmation celebrations to be held at OLHC Parish, Narre Warren

For those celebrating Confirmation Mass on Thursday 18th August 2022 at 4.30pm, the rehearsal is on Tuesday 16th August at 5.30pm. For those celebrating Confirmation Mass Thursday 18th August 2022 at 6.30pm, the rehearsal is on Wednesday 17th August at 7.00pm. All families are required to attend the rehearsal nights.

In next Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that following him can sometimes be hard. Jesus invites us to live in peace. But he also calls us to make good choices and do what is right. We don't expect to hear such difficult words from Jesus in the Gospel. But it is good to be reminded once in a while that the decision to do the right thing, the good thing, is not always easy and without conflict. In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus reminds his followers to be prepared for difficult decisions that will bring them into conflict with those closest to them.

Mary MacKillop Primary School is one of the three Parish Primary Schools belonging to the Parish of Our Lady Help of Christians, Narre Warren within the Diocese of Sale. Fr Brendan Hogan is our Parish Priest and Fr Ajin Albarnas is our Assistant Priest. We are grateful for their ongoing prayers, involvement and support of the students, families and staff of Mary MacKillop School.

‘Write a Book in a Day’ is a fun, creative and collaborative competition for students in years 5 to 12 and adult writing groups. Teams of up to ten have just twelve hours to write and illustrate a book from start to finish. To make it even more fun, unique parameters must be included in the story. Digital editions of the completed stories are made available on the Online Library and shared with hospitals across Australia.

Funds raised through sponsorship go to The Kids’ Cancer Project, a national charity supporting childhood cancer research. In 2021 the competition raised over $595,000 for childhood cancer research, thanks to 8,307 writers from 1,252 teams from every state and territory.

This year Mary MacKillop Primary School and the Year 6’s have again taken on the challenge to write a book in a day - from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. This will occur on Thursday 25th August. Our wonderful team of writers and illustrators are:   Summer, Jasmine, Ava, Apaar, Douie , Emma, Alanna, Jazz, Natalie K and Sienna.

We need help in raising money for this event, so we will hold a Lucky Dip throughout the school where we ask students to bring a gold coin to enter the Lucky Dip competition.

The Lucky Dip will take place on either Monday 22nd August, Tuesday 23rd August or Wednesday 24th August, so we ask students to bring along a gold coin on these days if they would like to participate.

We hope you can support this wonderful cause and help the ‘Write the Book in a Day’ team raise as much money as possible.

As part of our Inquiry focus on History, Year 2 students have assisted in creating a Class Museum. Students were asked to find an item from the past that their parents or grandparents had used/was special to them. Through conversation with the museum item’s owner, students were able to gather information about how old the object was, who its original owner was and how the item was used. Students were also encouraged to explore how the item has changed over time. Using the information they collected, students then wrote a presentation, which they used to help them in presenting their item to the class in the form of a formal presentation. All students did a wonderful job of sharing their museum item with the class and we would like to extend our appreciation to all the family members who allowed their items to be displayed within the museums.

The Year 2 students are eagerly awaiting our very first excursion to Como House and Garden in South Yarra. Como Historic House & Garden is one of the last surviving 19th Century grand houses of Melbourne. Students will compare the life of 19th Century children and families to their own experiences on a tour of the house where the lives of the 19th Century children are brought to life. It is sure to be a fantastic experience to conclude our History unit.
