This week we are celebrating Family Week. Our families are unique, diverse and bound by our expression of love for each other. We are blessed with the families in our school community . . .

A very big THANK YOU to school staff for their efforts in supporting this important calendar event in our school year.

Catholic Education Week
“Faith in the future – I have come that they may have life and have it to the full."
Message from the Director – Maria Kirkwood
(Diocese of Sale Website https://www.ceosale.catholic.edu.au/media/catholic-education-week-2021)
This year’s theme for Catholic Education Week, “Faith in the future - I have come that they may have life and have it to the full,” is a combination of a quote from John’s Gospel and the theme for the bicentennial celebrations of Catholic education in Australia.
Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all members of a school community to consider the call of the Gospel to build the Kingdom of God here and now.
Director of Catholic Education, Ms Maria Kirkwood, encourages everyone involved in Catholic education to contribute to one another’s growth and journey towards the fullness of life.
“During Catholic Education Week we are reminded that Jesus is the good shepherd who invites us to be the best people we can be. In all we do in Catholic schools, we strive to help each person experience the love of God, thus enabling them to live life fully,” she said.
“This year’s theme serves as an invitation to focus on the unconditional love of God and how this love is demonstrated throughout our lives, in our academic and spiritual pursuits. We have been created to be fully human, fully alive and able to participate in the life and love of God.
“The theme also reflects the core purpose of Catholic education, which is to provide an education that enables our students to make a meaningful contribution to the world, and enable them to enter into a life-giving relationship with God.
“I hope that staff, students, families and Parishes enjoy this special time and that our schools continue to be harmonious places where children are able to reach their full potential.
“Catholic Education Week is a highlight of the year for the Diocese of Sale, as the broader Catholic education community comes together to celebrate our Catholic identity and unique mission,” Ms Kirkwood concluded.
NAPLAN Online (Testing period Tuesday 11 May to Friday 21 May)
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses students’ literacy and numeracy skills. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are preforming at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. Information regarding NAPLAN online was distributed to parents of Year 3 and Year 5 students on Tuesday. The NAPLAN Online Timetable is set out below.
Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)
The AEDC provides a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families. Students don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au. If you have any questions, please contact Sally Lane or Claire Giles – Foundation Teachers.

School and Grade Mass and Reconciliation Celebrations
These celebrations have resumed this term. Parents and friends are welcome to join students during liturgical celebrations. Adherence to COVID safe plans applies when assembling. Current restrictions apply as per announcements by Victorian Government and guidelines directed by DOSCEL.
A Whole School Mass is planned for Thursday 27th May 2021 celebrating Catholic Education Week.
The three Parish Schools will join together during Mass on Saturday 22nd May 2021, 6pm at OLHC Church to celebrate the Bicentenary of Catholic Education in Australia. Please mark this event in your calendar. We would like to see many Mary MacKillop school families attend and together with Don Bosco and Trinity Schools help to bring to life the theme of this year’s special event Faith in the Future.
A number of students will be taking part in a combined choir, as well as participating in the Entrance and Offertory procession.
During Catholic Education Week families are encouraged to visit the newly Blessed and installed Stations of the Cross Garden. As you can appreciate more work is needed to beautify the area with suitable plants and outdoor décor. In celebrating our Catholic Identity during Catholic Education Week parents are invited to make a donation towards the garden area of the sacred space. Families may wish to donate shrubs, plants, pots, pottery, outdoor garden décor, etc. All donations will be acknowledged. A flyer will be distributed with further details.
Trinity Families is a charity which operates to provide funding for service providers who support families in the Gippsland and outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It makes annual distributions to charities from the monies earned from its trust fund investments. Disbursements are made without reference to faith or denomination and are overseen by independent trustees. To support this important charity in the Diocese of Sale, the MacKillop Kids Group members are initiating a Badge Making Fundraiser.
All children this week will have an opportunity to design and make their own special badge for Family Week. A small $2 donation for each badge would be greatly appreciated. All monies raised will go directly to the Bishop’s Trinity Fund. All cash donations will need to be directed to your child’s class teacher.
Donations of $143.30 was collected during last Friday’s Mother’s Day breakfast. Thankyou for supporting Catholic Care services.
The Ascension of the Lord, Cycle B - Sunday, May 16, 2021
In next Sunday’s Gospel, we hear the instructions that Jesus gave to his disciples before he was taken up to heaven. Jesus is telling his disciples that they will be able to do some of the very things that he had done during his life. Forty days after his Resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven. Mark’s Gospel tells us that a seat was already prepared for him, at the right hand of God. Because Jesus is with God now in heaven, he can help us as we try to follow his example. We certainly have a powerful friend in Jesus. He will help us as we live his Gospel today.
